McAllen International Airport Surpasses 1 Million Passengers in 2024.

New Airlines and Routes Drive Record Traveler Numbers in the RGV in 2024.

McAllen International Airport proudly announced its historic milestone of surpassing 1 million total passengers in a calendar year. This achievement reflects the airport’s continued record growth and enhanced connectivity, largely driven by the addition of four new nonstop destinations to Austin, Cancún, Mexico City, and Tampa-St. Petersburg.

Upon arrival, the 1 millionth passenger was honored at McAllen International Airport with on-site activations and complimentary tickets for all major McAllen festivals for the entire year, along with special products and snacks.

«Thanks to the expansion of McAllen International Airport’s air service, reaching 1 million passengers marks the unwavering spirit of McAllen in this record-breaking year,” said McAllen City Commissioner District 2 Joaquín “J.J.” Zamora. “Not only have we opened more opportunities for travelers, but we’ve also positioned McAllen as the gateway for leisure and business in the Valley».

Three new airlines and four new nonstop routes debuted from McAllen in 2024: Austin via Delta Air Lines, Mexico City via Aeroméxico, Cancún via Volaris, and Tampa-St. Petersburg via Allegiant Air. These new flights are part of the airport’s nine nonstop destinations, now including both domestic and international options.

«McAllen’s nonstop flights do more than just connect two destinations», said Isaac J. Tawil, City Manager. «They connect people, opportunities, economies, and help make dreams a reality. This historic milestone for McAllen International Airport is a strong indicator of success in our region».

Earlier this year, McAllen International Airport recorded a 25% year-over-year increase in traffic and received $7.4 million in federal funding to improve and expand the airport. In addition to offering a premium and comfortable travel experience for both leisure and business travelers, McAllen’s six airlines take passengers to top-tier destinations and major airports for global travel.

«We are continually improving, working on renovations and expansions, and have grown to offer nonstop flights to Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa, Los Angeles, Cancún, Mexico City, and Austin», said Aviation Director Jeremy Santoscoy, P.E. «We’re proud to serve our customers, and the work never stops as we study and look for new travel opportunities for our great region».
